Co-creation with young people
Every institution with idealistic goals wants to survive into the future. This means actively thinking ahead. The framework for financial survival is usually clear. But do you also have a substantive right to exist in the future?
This question can only be answered by your (future) target audiences. It's essential to engage with the ideas and worldviews of younger generations now. Moreover, hopefully, young people will have to take over from you sooner or later. But they won't do that if you've lost your relevance and don't connect with the knowledge and aspirations of the new generation.
Are you open to learning from young people? Are you willing to adjust your own values and objectives based on open dialogue? Co-creation means you're willing to relinquish control and give young people the space and time to participate. You use your own knowledge and skills to facilitate young people, making your institution future-proof. Co-creation is a method deeply rooted in your organization.

co-creation WWII field
In 2023, as director of the Museums and Memorial Centers 40-45 Foundation, Annette initiated a pilot project on co-creation for the WWII field, supported by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. Idske designed and supervised the project.
Together with Trive Technology (Merel Schöffel), a hackathon was organized for 30 young people from across the country. The young people used the Design Thinking Method. A steering committee, consisting of WO2 organizations and young people, formulated a task for which the young people sought a creative solution. After two days, six usable scenarios were developed. The young people were so motivated that after the hackathon, they continued as their own unit [WO2 Youth Community – link].
Some eye-openers:
- A sharp question is crucial
- Young people are motivated when they are given trust and freedom
Morality isn't static: the use of actors or digital technologies evokes different values among older generations than among younger ones. Who gets to decide?
Steering committee members included staff from the National Committee for 4 and 5 May, Theater na de Dam, the National Hiding Museum, and five young people. The pilot resulted in Co-creation with young people.
