Impact mindset

Traditionally, organizations are assessed on quantitative results: have you delivered what you promised? We often measure this in numbers and percentages. But for organizations with an intangible mission and goals, this approach often falls short.

The key question is: what do you really want to achieve? And how does your target audience perceive that? What is the long-term impact of your efforts? To answer these questions, it's essential to get to know your target audience well and evaluate your activities together with them.

Measuring impact goes beyond an evaluation or customer satisfaction survey. It involves a deep understanding of the quality and effectiveness of your activities and organization. Impact management is an ongoing process in which you, together with colleagues and stakeholders, continue to align your mission with the needs and experiences of your target groups.

It's more than a method – impact management is a mindset. With the right tools and a proactive attitude, you can master impact management and truly make a difference.

We support organizations in developing that Impact Mindset through workshops, training (including in-house), and guidance on impact management processes . This way, you can sustainably embed impact thinking within your organization and make a visible difference.

Impact measurement WWII field

In 2023, Annette, as director of the Museums and Memorial Centers Foundation 40-45, initiated a pilot project on Impact Measurement for the World War II field, with support from the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS). Idske designed and supervised the project with staff from the National Committee for 4 and 5 May, Theater na de Dam, the Indisch Herinneringscentrum (Dutch East Indies Remembrance Center), HC Kamp Westerbork, the War Graves Foundation, and Na de Oorlog (After the War). These organizations are all active in the field of World War II remembrance, but differ significantly in their mission, activities, size, target group, and stakeholders. During the pilot, the participants conducted their own impact measurements, and both the measurements and their experiences during the pilot resulted in a Roadmap for Impact Measurement Education .

The pilot showed that conducting an impact assessment provides insight into how an activity is structured, what the target group actually experiences, and what the organization truly wants to achieve. Going through an impact assessment process with colleagues from similar organizations provides additional insights and offers support during difficult and confronting moments.

Key insights from the process:

- The intended impact of an activity or of the organization as a whole does not always serve as the starting point for developing products and activities.

- the intended impact of an activity or product is often not in line with the impact desired by the target group.

Less is more: only products with impact matter. Activities can be adjusted from this perspective.

Developing impactful activities starts with knowledge of and connection with your target group.

- Successful impact measurement and impact management requires support throughout the organization.
